Every year, the French Embassy finances scientific activities organized by alumni. This initiative is part of the efforts of the French Embassy in Mozambique and Eswatini to revitalize the France Alumni Mozambique network, and reflects France's commitment to major global issues.

In 2025, following on from the United Nations Conference on the Ocean (UNOC 3) held in Nice, France in June 2025, and given the relevance of these issues to Mozambique's coastline, the alumni have proposed the organization of a "Conference on the Circular Economy and Innovation for the Protection of the Oceans", with a prior awareness-raising and training initiative on the blue economy aimed at young people. This initiative benefits from a tripartite agreement with the International Labor Organization (ILO) as co-financier.

A look back at the first part of this project, which ran from August 25 to 29, 2025, supported by Alumni through their various commitments in civil society, and the initial feedback from these awareness-raising workshops.

A France-OIT collaboration to serve Alumni

As part of the France Alumni network via Campus France, the French Embassy in Mozambique and Eswatini has been supporting an annual alumni project for the past 3 years. For 2025, the "Conference on the Circular Economy and Innovation for the Protection of the Oceans" has been selected.

Following the mobilization of the Alumni community, co-financing for the project was sought from the International Labor Organization (ILO), the UN's only tripartite agency for setting international standards, developing policies and designing programs to promote decent work for all men and women worldwide.

Finally, the alumni project will be supported by INCLUSÃO, an association promoting the social inclusion of young people and diversity in Mozambique, through the "climate action and human rights" department.

The Blue Business Ideas and Ocean Protection Promotion Contest

The objectives of this competition are to:

  • Promote the protection of the Indian Ocean by strengthening youth climate action;
  • Strengthen the skills of young people to develop and refine blue ideas and businesses that address the socio-economic inequalities of youth and promote ocean protection.

In methodological terms, the blue ideas competition was divided into 4 phases. The first phase consisted of a call for entries that gave higher education students and entrepreneurs the opportunity to submit, via an online platform, their proposed blue business idea and promotion of ocean protection, opening the space to ideas already tested or those still in need of testing.

The second phase consisted of training in the development of Affaires Bleues and Promotion de la Protection des Océans, and the third was the pitch battle to select the semi-finalist ideas.

It was a moment of learning, innovation and inspiration, reinforcing the role of young people as protagonists in building a more sustainable and resilient future.

Fourth phase: the awards ceremony at the Conference

The Conference on the Circular Economy and Innovation for the Protection of the Oceans is of particular importance, both nationally and internationally. Given the relevance of its theme, this conference has been integrated into the Embassy's "Mar Nosso" initiative, in conjunction with the PISCCA program.

The semi-finalist business ideas will be presented throughout the conference on October 30, 2025, and the various participants will have the opportunity to test and give their opinion on the products. This process will culminate in the presentation of awards for the Best Blue Business Idea and the Most Popular Blue Business Idea.
